Close Communion
Bostwick Hawley
"The usual arguments for the practice of Close Communion are of two kinds: the direct, or main arguments, which are claimed to be scriptural; and the indirect, or "underlying principles," which are inferential."

Come, O Come to Christ!
Rev Dr Plumer
"The Gospel is the good news sent by God to dying men. It offers pardon to the guilty, mercy to the ill-deserving, salvation to the lost. It declares how God can be just and yet justify the ungodly....It tells of Christ shedding his blood in the room and stead of sinners, obeying the law for them and then ascending to heaven as the great Intercessor and only Mediator."

Come Ye to the Waters
"Reader, it may be that YOU HAVE COME to the waters. Happy being! Have you ever regretted coming to the waters? No, never. Your only regret is that you did not come before. Had you accepted the invitation earlier many willful practices would have been prevented, many evil companions would have been avoided, and you would have been spared many bitter reflections. Have you not been amply repaid for coming to the waters? Yes. You parted with sin, but you found holiness. You gave up the world, but you obtained Christ. You incurred, perhaps, the displeasure of relatives and friends, but you have enjoyed the presence and friendship of God. To come to Christ is to be blessed for time and for eternity. This you know. Rejoice then, yourself, and invite others to the waters which have afforded you so much refreshment and delight."

Comfort for the Aged Poor
"Many read the Bible without finding the same blessing in doing so that this old man did, because they do not read it with a praying heart, ...Pray for the teaching of the Holy Spirit, that he may open your heart to receive the truths of the Bible, to see how it proves you to be a poor, fallen, sinful creature; and next, to show to you that Saviour who can cleanse you from all sin, and make you a child of God and an heir of heaven."

Common Cases: Are They Yours?
"Reader, these are a few of the many vain excuses made by persons, to justify their neglect of religion, which have come under the writer's personal observation. What now, fellow traveler to an eternal world, what is your state before God?"

"Consent Thou Not"
" "Let me recommend you, George," resumed Mr. Croft, "to be very careful in your choice of companions. See what young men are before forming any intimacy with them. Meet every inducement to do not only what is positively evil, but what tends to evil, with a resolute 'No.' Say it as though you meant it, and stand to it. A resolute decision at first will save you a world of trouble. You need not make a parade of your religion, but never be ashamed of it." "

Counsels to a Young Convert
Rev A W Mangum
"The pilgrimage is begun. It requires effort and vigilance for its consummation. You need counsel, and with sincerest sympathy I humbly offer it. Much that will help you is suggested by those words of warning first uttered by the inspired king: "IF SINNERS ENTICE THEE, CONSENT THOU NOT." These words clearly imply that you may or may not consent; that is, you have the power of choice. It implies that your will is free."

Cut It Down
"We are the trees which his own hand has planted. From us he desires and seeks fruit. When, at the close of the last year, he came to you with this intent, how justly, "after so long a time," might he have said, "Cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?" But the greatness of his compassion pleaded in your behalf; and cried, "Let it alone this year also!" It was a merciful reprieve."

Dancing and Balls
This tract is mainly composed of two editorials which appeared in the "Christian Advocate and Journal." "Dancing has existed since man first felt too much of joy to stand still, and in every land where the exuberant life of man has not been utterly crushed. It exists in every family today where children are born to a happy lot. To the rich melody of their own gushing laughter, with inimitable grace and faultless time, they trip over the floor till some better than angel folds them tenderly to rest. If anyone objects to such dancing he had better have a physician called at once."

Do Not Be Offended
"As Naaman was told by Elisha how to be cured of his leprosy, so have you been toid that "there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must, be saved," but the name of Jesus Christ. Acts iv,12. ... And while you have heard the only way of salvation faithfully proclaimed, and the consequences of neglecting it solemnly pointed out, perhaps, like Naaman, you have been offended and gone away in a rage."

Do You Know the Way?
"YOU are, doubtless, aware that the Bible speaks of the condition of unpardoned sinners as most perilous. It is declared that God is angry with the wicked every day; that, though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not go unpunished; .... You, perhaps, even now feel a reluctance to abandon yourself to such a dread possibility, and would gladly avail yourself of any means to escape. You believe in the Scriptures, are concerned to find so much previously unobserved danger, and would fain hasten away from the mouth of the yawning pit. You would fly; but whither would you go? You would run to a place of safety; but do you know the way? There is a way which, with your permission, we will briefly describe. Listen to the voice which speaks from heaven, the voice of love and grace: to you it is addressed."
