What If It Be All True
Dr Horatius Bonar
"If all these things be true, then I must be in earnest. Every thing connected with God and Christ, with sin and pardon, with life and death, with wrath and favor, with time and eternity, is so unspeakably momentous that I must be up and minding these things without delay. If I am not in earnest I am a fool, for what shall it profit me to gain the whole world and to lose my soul?"

What is Alcohol?
"ALCOHOLis not found in nature. All those things designed for the nourishment of man are the product of life and growth; alcohol is the result of death and decay. ... In their best state they are rotten drinks, being simply fruit-juice rotted. ... Wine is not the "essence of the grape," nor is whisky the substance of the grain. ... Certain it is that no other drug has exercised so deleterious an influence on the human race, combining fascinations so powerful with effects so wide-spread and so destructive."

What Is It To Be Holy?
Bishop Hamline
"Humble disciple, so long as thou canst feel and speak after this example, whether in joy or in sorrow, in composure or in disquiet, in rest or in the severest conflicts, in light or in darkness, as to the reasons of God's procedure, thou are sanctified throughout; and looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith, be steadfast and unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord."

What Will Make a Death-Bed Easy?
"I know of no prayer I ever offered, no service I ever performed, but there has been such a mixture of what was wrong in it, that, instead of commending me to the favor of God, I needed his pardon through Christ for the same. I have no hope in what I have been or done, yet I am full of confidence; and this is my Confidence - there is a hope set before me; I have fled, I still flee, for refuge to that hope; in Christ I trust; in him I have strong consolation, and shall assuredly be accepted in this Beloved of my soul."

What Will the End Be?
"Reader, weigh well the probable, nay, certain end of the course you are pursuing. You may readily come to a conclusion on this point; for the end of all things may be expressed in these words - happiness or misery - heaven or hell! ... you have a never dying life - an accountable immortal soul."

Who Is Jesus?
Rev Sia Sek Ong
• In 1871 Rev. Y. J. Allen, editor of the Shanghai Church newspaper, (published in the Chinese language,) offered a premium for the best essay on the text, "But whom say ye that I am?" The responses were quite numerous. After due examination, the premium was awarded to Rev. Sia Sek Ong, of the Methodist Episcopal mission at Foochow. The essay has since been published as a tract by our Society at the Mission Press in Foochow, and is very popular with Chinese readers. We now send it forth in English, hoping that these words of a converted Chinaman may lead some who have known the name of Jesus from infancy to pause and reflect, and to accept him as their Saviour.

Women in the Church
Bostwick Hawley
"The privileges and duties of Christian women in the Church are worthy of careful consideration. ... On this subject there is a wide diversity of opinion, some giving to them great latitude, others restricting them to the letter of our version of the Scriptures. Their qualifications for speaking and praying effectively none denies."

Woodcot Glen
"The following short narrative is not merely founded on fact, but is true to the life in all its painful details. It is little known how many cases there are of persons in a good position in life who are led on little by little, and finally yield themselves up to the degrading, soul-destroying sin of intemperance. ... may the following narrative serve as a warning!"

Working and Speaking for Christ
Rev Bostwick Hawley
"THE Christian Church is divided into two, and only two, great classes - the ministry and the laity. The work to be done by them and the methods of usefulness are, for the more part, the same. The things to be believed and the things to be done for the maintenance of personal piety, and for the performance of both personal and social duties in doing good, are, with only slight variation the same. ... And yet there are assigned to these classes some duties which belong to them severally, duties which ministers may not neglect and which the laity may not assume."

You cannot serve two masters
