  • NT 520 New Testament Introduction by Fredrick J. Long

    NT 520 New Testament Introduction

    Fredrick J. Long

    1. A Bible with Old and New Testaments (NASB95, ESV, NRSV, or RSV recommended; but NIV is acceptable). Electronic Bible versions in Logos Bible Software are available for purchase individually (see link below), or come bundled with various packages. The advantage of having a Logos electronic version is to be able to access Scripture texts from the class readings via the "linking" capability within Logos Bible Software. The RSV in Logos is least expensive ($9.95) and is used in Asbury's IBS classes; but in Logos it contains no marginal notes; the NASB95 ($24.95) has linking to marginal notes. 2. David Bauer, An Annotated Guide to Biblical Resources for Ministry. Annotated Guides 16. Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson, 2003. NOTE: This resource should be used as an aid in finding the best NT interpretation resources (commentaries, dictionaries, Greek grammars, lexicons, concordances, etc.). 3. The Essential IVP Reference Collection. Version 2. InterVarsity, 2001, available for $102.95 at http://www.logos.com/Academic/AsburyKY/Spring2009/ . This collection contains thirteen reference works plus four pocket dictionaries covering biblical studies, the study of New Testament Greek, theological terms, and apologetics and the philosophy of religion. These are listed below. Readings for the class will come from the first four of these works, although it may be beneficial to consult the others. Several of these reference works (and Bauer above) are required for other ATS classes.

  • NT 622 Exegesis of the Corinthian Correspondence by Fredrick J. Long

NT 622 Exegesis of the Corinthian Correspondence

    Fredrick J. Long

    1. A fairly literal English translation of the Bible; I would recommend NASB95. The RSV or ESV would also be acceptable. The reason for this request is that we will be semantic-diagramming verses in English and Greek. Other translations are encouraged for consultation and comparison. 2. David Bauer, An Annotated Guide to Biblical Resources for Ministry. Annotated Guides 16. Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson, 2003. NOTE: Use this book as an aid for using the best secondary resources (Bible dictionaries, Greek grammars, lexicons, etc.) for exegesis. Buy it, consult it, and buy books cited in it as needed in this and other classes. 3. A Greek NT; either the United Bible Societies (UBS) Greek NT (4th edition preferred—try to obtain one with the Greek-English Dictionary in the back) or Nestle-Aland (NA) 27th edition which comes also in an addition with parallel Greek and English columns. 4. Commentaries: Buy one and read this during the course, following our schedule of Corinthian readings; a. Witherington, Ben. Conflict and Community in Corinth: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary on 1 and 2 Corinthians. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1995. 492 pages. b. Fee, Gordon D. The First Epistle to the Corinthians. NICNT. Grand Rapids, Mich.: Eerdmans, 1987. 880 pages.
