  • ST 501 Method and Praxis by Laurence W. Wood

    ST 501 Method and Praxis

    Laurence W. Wood

Texts and Reading Assignments L. Wood, God and History, The Dialectical Tension of Faith and History in Modern Thought (EmethPublisher.Com, 2004). Learning to think theologically assumes that one has a basic grasp of the substantive issues in theology. This means one must be acquainted with the way that theology has been done since the earliest days of Church history. Because the key methodological issue of Christian theology is related to its historical claims, the focus of this work is on the relationship of faith and history, as it was specifically developed in modern thought. This work was written specifically for this new core course. 2. L. Wood, Theology As History and Hermeneutics, A Post-Critical Evangelical Conversation with Contemporary Theology (EmethPublisher.Com, 2004). There are many competing theological alternatives in the contemporary world, present- ing evangelical thought with a challenge on how to learn from them while re- maining true to the Scriptures. This work will introduce students to the represen- tative theologians and movements of the 21st century. The uniqueness of evan- gelicalism is its commitment to the authority of Scripture, while at the same time being willing to dialog with opposing points of view in order to learn how to re- late the enduring message of the Bible in today’s world. 3. Donald Thorsen, The Wesleyan Quadrilateral (Zondervan Publishing House, 1990). This is an excellent work on Wesley’s methodological assumptions. As- bury Theological Seminary is a confessional school of theology. Although we do not think that all schools ought to be confessional, the founding fathers decided Asbury would be established primarily to train students in the Wesleyan tradition and hence we have chosen to be confessional. Thorsen is a distinguished alum- nus of Asbury, and his work on Wesley’s methodology will introduce the student to the distinctive features of the Wesleyan way of doing theology.

    DO 670 United Methodist Theology

    Lawrence W. Wood

    1. Thomas A. Langford, Practical Divinity. Theology in the Wesleyan Tradition (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1998). Selected chapters. 2. David L. Smith, A Handbook of Contemporary Theology (Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 2000). This book provides a survey of the major current theological movements. This book is not a substitute for reading original sources, and it is used here as a tool for introducing students to a wide range of theological options in contemporary theology. 3. L. Wood, The Meaning of Pentecost in Early Methodism, Rediscovering John Fletcher As John Wesley’s Vindicator and Designated Successor (Lanham, MD: Scarecrow Press, 2002). Chapters 11-16, pp. 209-385. Pneumatology has been a central focus of Asbury Theological Seminary since its very beginning. This corresponds to its emphasis upon Christian perfection. This book shows that the baptism with the Spirit and Pentecostal terminology were widely used in 19th Century American Methodism. The last chapters of this book explore this theme in Methodist history since Wesley. Students will be introduced to some of the leading early British and American Methodists. The first half of this book is about John Fletcher “pentecostalizing” John Wesley’s theology and it serves as a text in DO690. An assumption of this book is that spiritual vitality in United Methodism depends upon an adequate theology of the Holy Spirit. 4. Selected Readings on the E-Library Reserve. 5. Strongly Recommended, but not required: Doctrine and Theology in the United Methodist Church (Nashville: Kingswood Books, 1991).
