OT 520 Foundations for Old Testament Study
Lawson G. Stone
Basic Textbook: Dillard, R. B. and Trempor Longman, An Introduction to the Old Testament. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1994. This text is a traditional OT introduction written by two evangelical scholars. An “introduction” to the OT is not a guide to the uninformed, but is a summary of current scholarly opinion about the authorship, date, origins, and composition of each OT book and the essential issues and problems involved in their interpretation. This book is to be read through the term and completed by the end of term. Supplementary Required Texts: Two additional textbooks are required for this course: W. W. Klein, C. L. Blomberg, R. L. Hubbard, Introduction to Biblical Interpreatation. Waco: Word, 1993. This book introduces the student to the essential issues involved in biblical interpretation and the methods employed with specific types of material. Students may omit sections dealing explicitly with the New Testament. V. H. Matthews, D. C. Benjamin, Social World of Ancient Israel: 150-587 BCE. Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 1993. In the lectures, we will take a rapid overview, in chronological order, of the world of the OT. This book complements that overview by covering the world of the OT from the perspective of social settings and institutions instead of merely moving chronologically. The two presentations complement and reinforce one another. Recommended: Bauer, David. Biblical Resources for Ministry. Wilmore, Revised 2nd Edition, 1995.

OT 730 Isaiah (IBS)
Lawson G. Stone
Required Texts: 1. Biblical Texts A. A modern, standard (non-paraphrasing) translation of the Bible with minimal editorial clutter in the layout. The ew American Standard Bible, Updated Edition is still the leading “literal” translation and is the text of reference. Revised Standard Version and ew Revised Standard Version are also useful. The ew International Version is becoming dated, but is still adquate. The “New King James” is of little use in a course such as this, but the KJV of 1611 remains unsurpassed at capturing the gradeur and cadence of Isaiah’s messages. B. More Paraphrastic versions are worth consulting at various points in your study. These include: Good ews Bible, ew Century Version, Living Bible, ew Living Translation. 2. John N. Oswalt, The Book of Isaiah (NICOT) Grand Rapids, Eerdmans. 3. High Recommended: Methodical Bible Study, Robert A. Traina. You will have already acquired this book in earlier IBS department courses.

OT 501 Concise Hebrew
J. Christian Stratton
1. Bornemann, Robert A Grammar of Biblical Hebrew. Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 1998. Along with the materials created by the instructor, this text will supplement knowledge for the course. We will do some of the exercises from this text as noted below on the "Course Outline." It contains lessons which will help us to know all the essentials of Biblical Hebrew grammar. The text is written in a personal dialogical way. 2. Brown, Francis, S. R. Driver, and Charles A. Briggs. A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament. Oxford: Oxford, 1907; reprint, Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 1979. Even though this dictionary or lexicon was published around the beginning of this century, it still provides the most wealth of information per the expense. You will probably agree its format needs revising. We will learn how to use BDB throughout the course. I have designed worksheets to accomplish this task. 3. Elliger, K., and W. Rudolph. Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia. Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1967-77. Referred to as BHS, this is the Hebrew Bible reproduced from the oldest complete manuscript of the Old Testament,Codex Leningradensis (ca. 1008 A.D.), without significant alteration. 4. Scott, William R. A Simplified Guide to BHS. Berkley, CA: BIBAL, 1987. This is a basic introduction to many of the peculiarities of the Hebrew Bible. Scott provides an English key to the Latin text critical notes (found at the very bottom of a BHS page) which were added by scholars this century who edited BHS and to the Aramaic side marginal notes (a.k.a. "massorah") which were put there by Medieval Jewish rabbis who created the vowel and accent system of the Hebrew Bible. Scott also explains many other features of the Hebrew Bible that will help you to understand how it has been put together through hundreds of years. 5. Chisholm, Robert. From Exegesis to Exposition. Grand Rapids: Baker, 1998. This book is designed to help a person figure out the significance of the Hebrew text and to craft a way to communicate its significance. We will read the portions of the text that relate to word study methodology, syntactical issues, and the narrative/poetry issues of the Hebrew Bible.
