The U.S. Maine exploded suddenly while on mission to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain in 1898. The grave of William Rushworth, Chief Mechanic of U.S. Maine is to the left of this monument but is not visible in the picture. Picture taken May 31st, 1901.
