Papers of T. B. Arnold
Summary
The Papers of Thomas Brayton Arnold (ARC 2016-002) document the personal, religious, and institutional legacy of Thomas Brayton Arnold (1849–1934) and his extended family, who played influential roles in the development of the Free Methodist Church, religious publishing, and child welfare reform in the American Midwest. Centered around Arnold’s work as a minister, editor, and co-founder of the Chicago Industrial Home for Children, the collection spans over a century and includes correspondence, photographs, sermons, printed material, and subject files that reflect both public ministry and private family life. The core of the collection highlights denominational leadership and social mission. Together, these materials offer a valuable lens into the intersections of faith, reform, and family in 19th- and early 20th-century America.
Researchers will find the collection especially valuable for studying the evolution of Free Methodist publishing, early child welfare initiatives, women’s roles in religious institutions, and the lived experience of faith-based family life in the Midwest. The size of the collection is two boxes comprising approximately 2 linear feet of space. There are no restrictions on this collection.
