Abstract
This study investigates the profound influence of Yoruba culture on the practice of Christianity among the Yoruba people in Nigeria. The Yoruba people group is in the western part of Africa with a larger percentage found in Nigeria. The Yoruba people of Nigeria have a rich cultural heritage that significantly influences the practice of Christianity among them. By employing a qualitative research approach, using descriptive research method, this study delves into the intricate relationships between Yoruba cultural values, beliefs, and practices and Christian teachings and practices.
The findings of this study reveal that Yoruba culture has significantly shaped the practice of Christianity among the Yoruba, resulting in a distinctive fusion of traditional and Christian practices. This blending of cultures is evident in various aspects of Yoruba Christian practice, including worship, rituals, and communal life. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics between culture, Christianity, and identity in Nigeria. The study’s findings have significant implications for Christian mission and ministry in Yoruba land, highlighting the need for contextualized approaches that acknowledge and respect the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that the practice of Christianity among the Yoruba is a rich tapestry of cultural and religious influences, reflecting the complex and dynamic nature of human identity and expression.
